On Track For A Healthier 2011
On Going Gluten Free for Lent 2011
Today is Ash Wednesday and it is time once again to examine my soul and decide what personal sacrifice I will make for this year's Lenten season. After a brief discussion with co-workers, I decided to give up wheat, oat and barley gluten. One of co-workers has an allergy to this gluten so, not only do I have a reference for what is safe to eat, but I will also be able to spend this Lenten season understanding the suffering of someone I respect greatly. I must say that my choice this year may be more in the true spirit of Lent than any previous year. I generally begin a soul searching, meditative process a few weeks before Lent. I examine my life trying to determine what sorts of activities or indulgences I should consider permanently removing from my life in order to achieve greater harmony, balance or spirituality. I also look at sacrifices which will cause me to think often of the Lenten season simply because I'm sacrificing something popular in my daily life. Here are some of the sacrifices I've made in year's past:

Why and How Gina Trapani of SmarterWare Switched to a Standing Desk
Lifehacker founding editor Gina Trapani recently decided to take the plunge that she's written about others taking, and, after a few days and some adjustments, is digging her new standing work setup. Here's how she, and others like her, made the transition.

Mac OS X Terminal.app Key Bindings for Beginning of Line and End of Line
Regardless of the OS I'm using, I spend the majority of my time ssh'd to some linux server somewhere around the globe. Recently I've switched from using Ubuntu as my client-side OS and am now using a MacBook Pro. I have small Mac keyboard and a magic mouse.
Cleaning Out Your Closet As You Enter the New Year 2011
Last April I wrote The Closet is Full. I wanted to revisit this issue as we begin a new year. I watched a documentary called "Tying The Knot" over the holiday break. One of the stories documented in the film was of a lesbian couple in Tampa, Florida. They served on the police force together and had been partners for several years and had held a "wedding" ceremony at some point in their relationship.
One of the partners was shot and killed in the line of duty and the family of the deceased was contesting her will. As I listened to the press conference where the family members explained their reasons for contesting the will, I thought once again about this post.
CAUTION Living May Be Dangerous To Your Health
When I was a kid, about 3 years old, I got stitches in my lower lip. Although I have very vague memories of the incident, I know more about it from the stories I've heard. I was in a car accident and my tooth went through my lower lip. I'm told that I was fighting the doctors so hard that I had to be wrapped up in a sheet with just a small hole cut out over the injury in order to get the stitches in. I've often wondered if that explains my worsening claustrophobia.
