DIY How To Make A String Art Scotty Dog
I was perusing Pinterest the other night and I came across an interesting and intriguing art form, String Art. I had never really looked at it much, but became very interested in some of the designs. I found myself scrolling through thousands of different artist's works.
I contacted one of the artists to inquire about purchasing a Scotty Dog art piece using string art. The response was $47 plus shipping. I thought, "For that price, surely I can do that myself!"
So I thanked the woman and proceeded to go into DIY mode.
I fired up the computer and googled how to do this project. After reading numerous DIY pages, confident in my plan, I headed to the local craft store. It can't be that hard, right?
So here's what you need for the Scotty Dog String Art Project:
- Crochet thread or embroidering floss (100 yard)
- Box of 3/4 inch nails with heads to use for wrapping the string
- Piece of wood appropriate for the project. I chose a piece of pine already cut into a heart shape.
- Template image for your art project
- Nail Hammer
- Pliers
- Scissors
- Ruler (to help you position the template on the board)
I found the string in my chose color and a piece of wood that would work for my little project at the local craft store. The craft store didn't have the nails, so I got back in the car and stopped at Home Depot for the nails and headed home, excited to start my project.
Once home I gathered the hammer, pliers, ruler and scissors and then fired up the computer to make my template to put on the wood.
I placed the template on where I wanted it and took a nail out and started working it around. I placed the nails about half a centimeter apart.
I hammered away.
Went all the way around the dog.
Once all the way around, I ripped the template off and started using the cord to go around the nails. I tied a knot on the end to hold the string so it would be tight. There was no rhyme or reason to the string placement. I just did what felt right.. I used white to make my Westie, Maggie. Maggie loves pink so I gave her a pink collar, And here's how she turned out.
I was pretty pleased with the results of my first attempt.
So to recap, I have about $10 worth of supplies and 1.5 hours of time invested.
