Hail to the Mighty Kale: Best Heirloom Plant To Grow For Smoothies

It's the third day of the New Year 2016 and I'm recovering from a bug I picked up from our recent trip to San Diego.  This was not exactly how I planned on ringing in the New Year.  I had big plans for the four day holiday weekend, but my body did not cooperate and I ended up in bed. I lost all control of the grand plans and was forced to sit on the sidelines. Our bodies have a way taking care of us even when we don't think it is necessary.

During my little time out, I remembered one of my favorite things arrived before Christmas and I hadn't taken the time to check it out, the Rare Seed Catalog from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds in Mansfield, Missouri.  The catalog was first printed in 1998 and was sent to 550 gardeners.  The 2016 catalog has grown to 700,000 copies sent to over 70 countries.

Did you receive your stunningly beautiful free catalog yet?  If not, head on over and order your catalog today. They go quickly!

I have been ordering all of my non-GMO heirloom seeds from Baker Creek since 2008.  I have lost count of all the different variety of seeds I have grown over the years. But I can tell you from years of experience that the seeds from Baker Creek are outstanding.  One of the hardiest seeds I have grown is Blue Curled Scotch Kale.  I ordered a package of seeds and planted my first six foot row of kale five years ago and I haven't had to plant any kale since.  Yep, that's right.  My $2.00 package of seeds has been producing for five years.  It's January 3, 2016 and I still have the original kale I planted five years ago growing in my garden.  The stuff is simply amazing! I have grown hundreds of dollars worth of kale over the years.  I literally cut enough kale to fit in kitchen size trash bags and share it with my family and friends.  There are times when I can't keep up cutting the kale it grows so fast.  Not to worry, if it gets out of control I give it a good haircut and we are in business again.

Kale is very good for you and packs a powerful punch.  It is rich in vitamins K, A, and C, iron, calcium, antioxidants, high in fiber, low in calories, and has zero fat.  What's not to like about kale?  It's versatile and can be used in smoothies, salads, casseroles, chips, soups and cooked down in greens.  Hail to the Mighty Kale!
