Birth of Seedlings
Spring is in the air. I can smell, feel, and see it happening all around me. Birds are chirping, the sun is shining, and I am witnessing the birth of my seedlings. It is an awesome feeling. It reminds me of a line in one of my favorite songs by Bette Midler.
"Just remember in the winter ~ far beneath the bitter snow ~ lies
the seed ~ that with the sun's love ~ in the spring becomes the rose."
This winter has been especially harsh on me. I know it is typical Ohio weather, but it seems as if we rarely had a peak at the sunshine. I need to feel the sunshine on my face. It warms the soul and puts a smile on my face. I am thrilled that spring is fast approaching.
In January I ordered heirloom seeds and posted my selections in a previous blog post. A few weeks ago I started a few of my early spring crops. I am witnessing the birth and growth of my little seedlings. It really brings me joy. I am blessed to have a perfect location inside my home for starting seedlings. My sewing room is used dually as a green house in February, March and April. It faces the southwest and captures the brilliant sunshine coupled with heat coming up from our radiant heating system. It is a wonderful combination for plant propagation. I use standard seed trays with humidity domes and cow pots that can be planted directly into the ground. They create their own moisture. I rarely have to add additional water.
I started onions and cabbage. First planting dates are March 15, 22, and 29. I will also plant peas during this time period, although you do not need to start them indoors. Next will be potatoes, broccoli, lettuce and carrots. Broccoli and lettuce will be started indoors. First planting dates are April 5, 12, and 19. After my little seedlings are transplanted, I will use cloches to harden them off, protect from weather conditions, and extend the growing season.
The sun is shining and the temperature today should reach 50 degrees. I am going to head out and work in my raised beds today and prepare them for my seedlings.
